Mick McHugh Records Song for Don Spencer 40th Year Anniversary Album
I’m honoured to have contributed to Don Spencer’s OAM 40th year Anniversary edition of his iconic album ‘Feathers, Fur or Fins’.
Don Spencer is Mr. Playschool! As a young lad I watched him on TV in Dublin! He presented for over 30 years on both Australian ABC and UK’s BBC Playschool. He’s a living legend of children’s music and entertainment and has paved the way and set the bar for so many of us in Children’s Entertainment.
I was invited to record a re-imagining of his track called ‘EMU’, originally a Bluegrass style song with banjo and fiddle. We kept those elements, while leaning into my Celtic heritage and added a pumping EDM rhythm. We added an Irish Reel called ‘Humours of Tulla’ at the end of the track to give a ‘lift-off’ sensation, as though the EMU is running at, like the song says, “80 on the FLAT!”
